It is July, middle of the summer season. Warm evenings, which is great for some unique activities. Here we share with you alternative ways to watch films in Zagreb, and how Zagreb films took us to the mental hospital.
Watch films and meet the director:
We organized a screening of documentary films, directed by Theresa Khalil, an Egyptian filmmaker director living in Croatia for almost 3 years. The screening title was “Movie screening and discussion – Life through unique eyes”. It was hosted by Vestigium association which is an NGO concerned with providing organic local food and is organizing many other unique activities related to art and culture.
The screening was attended by different nationalities including Australia, Finland and Bosnia. As usual the Croatian presence was not to be missed.
Films were divided into two periods, one from Theresa’s nomadic period and one from her Zagreb period. If you missed the meetup, you can still watch the films and videos from the Zagreb period as they are available on her YouTube channel UniqueTV. So check them out.

Watch a film in a place related to the film location:
Another unique evening was held at the psychiatric hospital. weird?! not really.
That was the best place to show Jack Nicholson’s old film ” One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” as the film was mainly telling a story from inside the psychiatric hospital. Great idea to revive watching old films. The organizer of the evening is the brain behind Motovun Film Festival which takes place in July of every year in the town of Motovun, A beautiful town situated 270 m above sea level, on the hill dominating the wonderful Mirna river valley. It is probably the most beautiful medieval town in Istria. If you are a fan of films and looking for an alternative film festival then search no further. Get more info here
The film screening in the hospital was a great opportunity to visit the hospital museum and see how mental patients were treated back then.
We leave you with the photos of the film screening and the museum.
Remember that we have a film club with English discussion, check out more ways to watch films in Zagreb
